Alexa, find me a match.

In all seriousness, it’s 2024 and AI’s reach is undeniable. It’s even made its way toward dating and relationships.

Gone are the days when meet-cutes and chance encounters were the only ways to meet potential partners. Matches nowadays are just an app or site away.

Lately, platforms have begun adding AI features to their services to help daters expand their search even further. This explains why you’ll see an AI dating site ad pop up every now and then.

And with that said, I pose this question: are AI dating apps the ultimate endgame? Are they a permanent phenomenon or are they just a fad?

AI’s Entrance to the Dating Field

It’s no secret that sites and apps currently run the dating game. A 2023 Forbes Health/OnePoll survey revealed that around three in 10 US adults have used such platforms. Over 40% of participants also stated they had easier dating experiences when they tried their luck online.

Going by these numbers, online dating isn’t slowing down any time soon.

Some daters don’t limit themselves to dating apps. Some use social media platforms like Instagram to slide into people’s DMs (read: send direct messages). Others even go as far as using their LinkedIn accounts to look for matches. One StudyFinds study even found that 61% of their participants aged 35 to 40 found a date on the platform.

Fast forward to today, and AI has come marching in.

Dating apps have started incorporating AI features to boost their services. At the same time, AI-powered apps have entered the market. Some use chatbots and personality tests as their basis. If you’ve tried answering those long online questionnaires, chances are, your answers have been used in their algorithms.

On the other hand, others have more gimmicks. One app even uses one’s face to find matches. Another platform even writes bios for profiles. And here’s an unorthodox platform: one app offers AI nudes for a specific price.

Why the integration, you ask? For dating app developers, it’s a way to combat their pain points, such as user burnout and spamming. Another benefit is that it makes their platforms and services more accessible.

Are Algorithms Superior to Human Connections?

As AI’s expansion to the dating world continues, you may wonder if it does a complete takeover of the field. Cosmopolitan and dating app Bumble surveyed 5,000 singles aged 18 to 42 to gauge people’s perspectives.

The survey discovered that most respondents (69%) were excited about its possibilities. Meanwhile, some admitted to being skeptical. Modern dating is already complicated, and adding new technology makes it even more difficult. And with that, some people are rightfully concerned about possible mishaps.

AI dating apps may be convenient, but they can’t replicate authentic human connections. Even data-driven systems can’t guarantee matches clicking without a hitch.

Is offline romance dead? Absolutely not. No machine or algorithm will totally replace human intimacy. Even the fanciest bio can’t save you from bad matches.

Only time will tell if these apps are here to stay forever. But for now, proceed with caution.
