Monogamy as we know it is being with only one person at a time. That sounds ideal, right? Few things are as glowing as being called a loyal partner sticking through the good, bad, and ugly.

But as the times change, so does the idea of monogamy. Exclusivity remains essential, but more couples have adopted more modern views.

For one, they’re well aware that monogamous relationships don’t always secure endgames. It might sound disappointing, but it’s reality. As much as we want happy endings, we can’t always get what we wish for.

Did you know that monogamy has different types? Among them is emotional monogamy — the subject of this very piece. Let’s discuss what this type entails, from the positives to the drawbacks.

What Does it Mean to be Emotionally Monogamous?

When a couple is emotionally monogamous, it means exactly what it says — emotionally exclusive. And going by that definition, they don’t seek out deeper emotional connections with other people. Your partner is your one and only confidant for all your vulnerability.

Normally, exclusive couples are emotionally and sexually monogamous simultaneously. In this case, however, they’ve picked a lane.

While the emotional exclusivity remains firm, they can choose to bend traditional norms to suit their preferences. For instance, a couple practicing this arrangement can have multiple sexual partners outside their relationship consensually while limiting emotional ties to each other only.

Benefits of Emotional Monogamy

An emotionally monogamous relationship has its upsides. Here are several benefits couples enjoy with such an arrangement:

#1: Strong connections

There’s a different kind of intimacy when you share personal thoughts and feelings with someone you like. The more you’re vulnerable with someone, the more you’ll connect with that person. You’ll get to know each other on an emotional level, discovering each other’s boundaries and needs.

#2: Lesser insecurities

Jealousy is a disease that creeps into even the most self-assured individuals. While emotional exclusivity won’t eradicate that possibility entirely, it provides a good dose of assurance. Thanks to this, insecurities are kept at bay, or at least at a manageable level.

#3: Simultaneous individual growth

Emotional bonds build an encouraging and supportive environment. Cheering on each other’s endeavors helps grow both relationships and the self. If we can be our own cheerleaders, rooting for a partner’s success shouldn’t be a tall order.

The Downsides

With the benefits come the drawbacks. An emotionally exclusive relationship has its share of hurdles, a couple of which are the following:

#1: Challenging balancing act

Be careful when making an emotional investment: too much stock can poison the well. You may end up neglecting your needs and boundaries while trying to satisfy your partner. If you want to pull off a balancing act, you two should work to keep the scales equal.

#2: Relationship lull

Emotional satisfaction is one thing. Complacency is another story. If you simply bank on the former, you may lose your desire for growth. Stagnancy is development’s worst enemy, so avoid predictability by keeping your relationship fresh.

Like monogamy itself, emotional monogamy isn’t a one-size-fits-all arrangement. That said, though, you can’t deny the emotional fulfillment it brings. Why not give it a shot?
