They say that if you feel butterflies in your stomach when you first lay your eyes on someone, you’ve fallen in love at first sight. Most (if not all) of us have seen this play out in movies, books, or TV shows.

There’s no denying that such a concept is beautiful. Who wouldn’t want to meet the love of their life in a magical manner? But is falling in love at first sight really possible? Is it really love or just infatuation?

What Does Falling at First Sight Mean?

Falling for somebody at first sight means you’ve felt an automatic connection with another person. Believe it or not, there has been debate about this concept’s existence. One side reduces it to intense attraction at first sight, while others believe it goes beyond superficial attraction.

Numerous experts say this phenomenon happens because of physical attraction. This observation has merit because we can’t deny a handsome or pretty face when we see one. And for some people, a person’s appearance is enough to ignite sparks.

For many relationship therapists, love at first sight is a mix of lust and infatuation. Someone can physically desire and find fascination in another person even if they don’t know them too well.

Many people say they’ve fallen in love with someone at first sight. A 2017 survey of more than 5,000 singles shared that 4 out of 10 respondents experienced such a phenomenon.

How Do You Know You’ve Fallen in Love at First Sight?

Now that the definition is clear, how can you tell if you’re experiencing such an attraction toward someone? These signs should give you a hint:

#1: The emotional connection is strong.

You don’t know how and why, but a strong emotional pull draws you into a specific someone. It may be your first encounter, but you feel you’ve met someone who’s in sync with you.

#2: Their presence makes you physically react.

Do you tense up when they’re around? Does your heart suddenly beat fast when they’re on your radar? Do your cheeks blush when they inch closer to you? If one (or all) of these apply to you, you may be catching feelings.

#3: They feel safe or familiar.

You’ve just met the object of your affection, yet you feel like you’ve known them for a while. You don’t know why, but they give you a sense of comfort. Being with them feels like entering a safe space.

#4: They always seem to occupy your mind.

Let’s say it’s been a few weeks since you last saw the object of your affection. However, you can’t seem to get them out of your head. The thought of them can make you wander off into a daydream you don’t want to end.

What Should You Do?

If you’re convinced you’re falling in love at first sight, the best you can do is enjoy your emotions while it lasts. You deserve to feel such beautiful feelings.

However, don’t get too lost in the clouds. Don’t rush things and let nature take its course. As you get to know each other, you’ll know if you and the object of your affection are a great match.
