How to Communicate With Ukrainian Women — Some Ideas to Share

Breaking the ice with a Ukrainian woman or with any woman for that matter will be easy or hard depending on your personality; either you are introverted or extroverted.

What is the strength of your self-confidence? Are you too self-conscious and is it getting in the way? How open are you to new experiences and people? These are all a part of what might determine how you interact with others in general.

So how should we interact with others? Think of the service industry.

Remember that when you communicate with another human being, it may help to think of it as providing a service of sorts. When you speak with the intent of winning another person’s interest, think of yourself as a performer.

When you perform for someone, you are providing a service. To see how important this idea is, we’ll entertain an analogy. Say that you go to a restaurant. You are not expecting to service the staff since it is the other way around. The staff will provide service in the form of welcoming gestures, ask you questions about your condition, etc.

Remember that just because they are welcoming you and providing service, this does not mean that their dignity is forfeited by their role. If you cause a ruckus or disrupt business in the establishment, they may ask you to leave or call authorities to escort you off the premises.

Take this analogy of service and apply it in a conversation: you play the role of the serviceman. Instead of being a server or reception staff, you are a conversationalist aiming to please. At this point, you might be thinking of various questions about your conversation partner’s condition. Remarks about her condition and day, etc.

Now let’s fill out a short list of how we can entertain our Ukrainian lady.

Possible conversation topics:

1. Ask if she went shopping.

Shopping is a general activity that Ukrainian women love to do. You might ask if she went out and bought anything and I’m sure she would love to share with you what she bought or would like to buy (this one might be useful if her birthday is coming up).

2. Compliment her new accessories or hairstyle.

Ukrainian women, just like any other women, love compliments on something new that they’ve done with their hair, earrings, or accessories. It also indicates that you are paying attention to her in detail which is a plus. Regardless of what you think of her choice, compliment it and make it a topic.

3. Ask about her friends and family and how her work is.

Ukrainian women generally find themselves among friends and give color to their life for better or worse. Sharing happy moments with friends with you would be a pleasant conversation for both of you. At times, she might want to blow some steam if a friend or co-worker slighted her in the least way.

Aim to please, but also remember yourself.

Remember that a conversation takes two to tango. We are considering that you make the first gesture of service — that is, you spark the conversation and revolve it around her. Allow her to share her day with you because there is nothing more a Ukrainian woman would love than for herself to be the main focus of your attention.

However, again, it takes two to tango. What if she does not wonder about your day or your interests or if she acts like a “bad customer?” If that is so, you might want to reconsider if your time, which is just as important, is worth sharing with her.
