Don’t get me wrong — all dates are fun and valid! Candlelight dinners are classic for a reason, and you can never go wrong with bowling nights or long-distance watch parties.

But what if you add some challenge? Game nights are a nice change of pace from your usual sit-downs, especially if you go beyond board and card games.

The Internet has tons of video games for couples. Why not choose one (or more) to play together?

Why Play Video Games Together?

No two gamers are alike. So, a couple can have different gaming habits. One may prefer gaming alone, while the other doesn’t mind crowded game cafes. But despite these challenges, there are positives in unleashing your inner gamers together.

First, it brings you closer. In 2021, a Washington Post piece covered a couple who picked up gaming together as a quarantine hobby during the COVID-19 pandemic. They shared how it helped them gain new tidbits about how their minds worked.

Second, gaming boosts communication. You and your partner are working toward the same goal. And with that, there’s lots of talking while pressing consoles.

And lastly, a little friendly competition doesn’t hurt anyone. You’ll have fun and flirty banter trying to outwit each other. It adds excitement and drives you to bust out your best moves.

Fun Video Games for Couples

Dust off that console or get your PCs ready. These games should make for an enjoyable date night at home:

#1: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Let’s be real: nobody’s too old for Mario! There’s a reason many still play its games from childhood to today. Mario Kart is among them.

The game is a great dose of healthy competition. You and your partner can challenge each other in fun rounds of racing. Aside from a good time, the game can also give you glimpses of your partner’s personality through their selected options, from character to vehicle choices.

#2: Overcooked

If you can’t take the heat, then stay out of the kitchen, right? That’s Overcooked’s main motto. This cooking simulation game is chaotic, with chefs performing in high-pressure settings.

There’s never a dull moment in this game. The ever-changing kitchen is always busy preparing meals and serving guests. But it will definitely test your teamwork, communication, and calm. If you and your partner have a short fuse, try to take things slow.

#3: It Takes Two

If you think it sounds romantic, the game is anything but. Protagonists May and Cody start happy, only to be thrown into unimaginable chaos when their relationship’s cracks start showing.

This game is easy to play, even for non-gamers. You and your partner will undoubtedly have fun navigating its twists and turns. Perhaps the storyline will even create a good point for reflection about your relationship.

#4: Baldur’s Gate 3

RPGs (role-playing games) may not be the first thing to pop up when thinking of or searching for couple-friendly games, but they’re good choices. Baldur’s Gate 3 is among those selections.

The game requires sound decision-making, from character creation to defeating mind flayers. It has over 75 hours of gameplay, so you and your partner have much to cover. You’ll encounter challenges, but you’ll overcome them with your teamwork.

Looking for choices? Use this list of video games for couples as a starting point. Happy gaming!
