Long-distance couple celebrating Valentine’s Day virtually.

February 14 is just around the corner, so it’s almost time to celebrate Valentine’s Day. When you read this, it may even be Heart’s Day already!

But for long-distance couples, Valentine’s can be quite a challenge. The physical separation is the obvious obstacle. Time zones don’t help, either. Fortunately, celebrating together isn’t impossible. Although, let’s not deny that it’ll take much work.

For all its cons, long-distance relationships present special opportunities. Instead of surface-level things, couples can instead concentrate on their relationships’ building blocks.

Far-flung lovers can go all out even while apart, reminding each other why they’re together in the first place. Are you tired of the usual video calls? Turn up the romance with these suggestions.

#1: Send each other photos

Since you live in different places and time zones, try seeing the world through each other’s eyes. Photos are the best way to do that.

But isn’t this something you’re likely already doing?

Well, try putting down your smartphone for a change. This time, use disposable cameras. Take shots of your respective environments and send your cameras to each other.

Get those photos developed on the 14th to get a glimpse of each other’s day-to-day lifestyle. Once they’re in your hands, hop on a video call and go through each snapshot.

Save those pictures by storing them in a photo album. You’ll have something extra special to look back on, especially when you’re missing each other more than usual.

#2: Write love letters

Few things are as timelessly romantic as love letters.

There’s just something about handwritten messages and decorated stationery that tugs at the heartstrings. Not only do they keep communication alive and kicking, but they’re also a great display of extra effort.

Send each other sweet letters to keep the sparks flying. Mark the occasion by keeping them sealed until Valentine’s Day. This way, you’ll have something special to look forward to.

Add personal touches like pictures or mementos of special memories. Just be sure to send them ahead so they’ll arrive well before the 14th.

#3: Share a candlelit meal

Valentine’s Day celebrations typically include food. While you can’t physically eat together, you can recreate such dates virtually. You can go about this in three ways.

Are you pressed for time? Have your favorite dishes delivered to your doorstep.

If logistics aren’t a problem, send each other deliveries from local joints. Fortunately, food delivery apps are aplenty around the world. All you need to do is change your respective locations and check if your partner’s favorites are available.

Do you love cooking? Make your date more special by cooking together over a call. You’ll feel closer, even from afar. Also, few things compare to eating something you made with your bare hands.

Whatever your choice is, don’t forget to add candles. It’s Valentine’s Day, after all, so a romantic setup is just right.

#4: Go on a virtual tour

If there’s one good thing that happened because of the pandemic, it’s the rise of virtual tours and events. If you don’t know how to celebrate Valentine’s Day while apart, this is for you.

What was once a way to pass the time stuck at home has become a fun date night idea. Since you can’t visit a place or attend an event together in person, this is the next best thing.

Just pick a specific activity or place you’re interested in and check if they offer virtual options. And the best part? There’s no need for expensive flights and accommodations!

#5: Give gifts

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. However, you may want to remind each other of your presence on a special day like Valentine’s.

While gift-giving doesn’t need an occasion, a Valentine’s gift is always a nice gesture. Get closer by sending each other a present from your part of the world. It doesn’t need to be fancy; just make sure it’s meaningful.

Just because you’re apart doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate Valentine’s Day together. Who says love can’t survive long distances? Prove Cupid right and bask in the holiday, even from afar.
